Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman signs with the UFC!!!

MMAjunkie.com reported Brenneman’s signing earlier this week. Known as “The Spaniard,” Brenneman is a one-time EliteXC and four-time Ring of Combat veteran. The Pennsylvania native was the winner of the first season of Spike TV’s “Pros vs. Joes,” and he has dropped just one bout in his first 11 professional contests – a closer-than-the-score-indicates unanimous-decision defeat to current UFC fighter John Howard.
The former NCAA Division I wrestler has posted stoppages in six of his 10 career wins.

    SPECIAL TO THE RECORD

Jim Miller will be stepping into the ring for the fourth time for the Ultimate Fighting Championship in the promotion’s milestone 100th Pay-Per-View from the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday. Miller, who along with his older brother Dan, trains in Whippany, is 13-2 overall in his career and 2-1 in his first three fights with the UFC, the top promotion in mixed martial arts.
And somehow, tennis just wasn’t going to cut it. The North Jersey native will be stepping into the ring for the fourth time for the Ultimate Fighting Championship in the organization’s milestone 100th pay-per-view Saturday from the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. “They’re putting on a pretty big show,” Miller, 25, said of the card, which includes two championship fights.

“It’s a stacked card with a ton of great fights.” That’s just what Miller, a lightweight at 155 pounds, was looking for when he took a wrestling background from Sparta High School and one year at Division I Virginia Tech and combined it with a brown belt in Brazilian jiujitsu to embark on a mixed martial arts career in 2005. “It’s a rush,” he said. “You could get hurt, but you could get hurt doing a lot of things. You’re forced to push yourself, and I needed the competition. My brother and I began taking classes in jiujitsu and six months later we were fighting.” Miller, who along with his older brother, Dan, trains in Whippany, is 13-2 in his career and 2-1 in his first three fights with the UFC, the top organization in mixed martial arts. He won his first two fights in the UFC, earning bonuses for the submission of the night in his first fight in England in October, and the fight of the night in his second fight in December in North Carolina. But he is coming off his first UFC loss in March, when he dropped a unanimous decision to Gray Maynard, ending an eight-match winning streak.
“In this sport, you only fight every couple of months,” he said. “So for the last couple of months, I’ve been a loser, and I don’t like that.” He will be facing Mac Danzig, who won the sixth season of television’s The Ultimate Fighter in 2007, and boasts a career record of 19-6-1. Danzig is coming off two straight losses. “I haven’t faced a guy with the skill set that he has,” said Miller, who will be making his Vegas debut. “He’s experienced with a solid background in kickboxing and is very dangerous on the ground.”

With his wrestling background, Miller is strong on his feet and on the ground. He also mixes in Brazilian jiujitsu and Muay Thai, which is a form of boxing that uses kicks and punches practiced in Southeast Asian countries. Most of Miller’s matches have ended with chokes. Nine of his 13 wins have come when he “subbed-out” (forced his opponent to submit), the fastest coming in 1 minute, 4 seconds.
“I’m a fan of choking guys out,” Miller said almost sheepishly. “I guess I have a knack for it.” The only other ways to win are by knockout or decision. “Wrestling is a great tool to have in this sport, but you can’t pin your opponent,” Miller said. Since joining the UFC, Miller has been able to train six days a week, combining strength and conditioning with jiujitsu and Muay Thai classes. He had been doing construction work with his father, Mike, and his brother. He recently got married to his wife, Angel, in November. “When you reach this level, you have to give it 100 percent,” he said. “My whole family has been very supportive of it. My father suddenly became an expert on MMA, and my parents haven’t missed one of my or my brother’s fights.” Miller hopes that his fight on such a big card will lead to bigger, tougher fights.
“I love the pressure,” he said. “I like having to train and to push myself. But it all depends on a lot of other fighters in the division. There’s a good stack of guys standing in my way.”
